Last month I wrote about my first experience renting from Silvercar in Denver. It goes without saying that the Silvercar experience is much better than your typical rental car counter. With Silvercar you won’t encounter upselling from employees, random fuel surcharges, and everything else that makes traditional car rental a struggle. Since it’s inception, Silvercar only rented one vehicle type, the Audi A4. In light of Silvercar’s acquisition by Audi last year, it was only a matter of time before another model was introduced. That time is now with the launch of the Audi Q5 to Silvercar’s fleet.
A Family Friendly Silvercar: The Audi Q5
While the Audi A4 is a great car to drive, it isn’t necessarily family-friendly. Then again, most mid-sized sedans aren’t. With the Q5, families or larger groups will enjoy a little more legroom, and the cargo space that an SUV provides.
With our first child born last May, I quickly discovered that traveling isn’t quite as easy as it used to be. Even though our daughter weighs a mere 17 pounds, the amount of gear we take with us has seemingly doubled. I can only imagine how difficult it is for larger families. Fortunately, Silvercar locations have car seats available for their renters. Since car seats vary by weight and height, it’s best to call ahead of time to ensure the model they have works well for your little one. Leaving the car seat at home would definitely make navigating the airport much easier!
Silvercar Audi Q5 Locations & Prices
At the moment, Q5’s are available in the following markets:
- Fort Lauderdale
- Los Angeles
- San Francisco
- Salt Lake City
Presumably Silvercar plans to gradually roll out it’s fleet of Q5’s to most, if not all other locations. I’m guessing space constraints will be the biggest obstacle.
I price checked a few different markets for the Q5 and found that it consistently came in around $20/day higher than the A4. If I’m being honest, I think that’s a little steep since the MSRP for both cars is about the same. Then again, SUV’s are always significantly more expensive than sedans at all car rental outfits. Maybe there’s something about the economics of SUV rentals that I’m not aware of?
Silvercar is a great service and completely outclasses it’s car rental peers. Understandably, that comes with a price which is typically ~ 30% higher than traditional car rental. That’s the reason I made a wish for a economy version of Silvercar last year. I’d love to see Silvercar’s service implemented with a lower cost car.
If you haven’t tried Silvercar, sign up and use my referral code: QPHZRXIF. We’ll both get a $25 Visa gift card. Just sign up on a normal web browser and toggle to “Accounts”. From there, you’ll see the referral section where you can enter the code. Once you’ve entered the referral code, you can also use promo code: BESTEVER during your first rental to get 30% off! Between the gift card and the promo code, you probably won’t pay anymore than you would for a normal car.
