After quickly clearing customs from our SriLankan flight we stepped outside of the airport to see a few dozen people holding various resort signs. We quickly found the gentleman with the Conrad Maldives sign and followed him as he took us to our seaplane check-in area. He promptly had us checked in, took our luggage for the plane, and whisked us to the very nicely air conditioned Conrad Maldives minivan.
At this point we were taken by a driver to the Conrad Maldives lounge at the Male Airport to wait for our seaplane ride.
Transportation to the Conrad Maldives
To give a little background on the seaplane ride, it’s required for most resorts in the Maldives as they are all on separate islands spread out over hundreds of miles. There are some resorts that are close enough for a speedboat ride but the Conrad is not one of them. Although the Conrad actually has a charter yacht option as well. The charter yacht, I imagine, is very pricey for a 3 hour ride!
So we took the seaplane route at a not insignificant sum of $500 per person round trip. Unfortunately the price is the price in the Maldives with no seaplane company competition. So, seaplane it was, and in the Conrad Lounge we waited.
Conrad Maldives Lounge at Male Airport
We were quickly led into the lounge which was spacious and clean. An employee greeted us in our seats and started the check-in process by pre-authorizing our credit card to the tune of $3,500! We were told it would be 30-45 minutes until our plane was ready so we settled in to wait for a bit. Unfortunately neither the Conrad, or us, have any control over this process.
Although the food options weren’t super exciting, they certainly were sufficient. Had I known exactly how pricey the food and drinks were at the Conrad I may snuck a few items in my suitcase!
The lounge also offered short shoulder and back massages which according to my husband was of a very good quality. Sadly the second I sat down to get mine our seaplane was ready to board.
Also worth noting is that each lounge bathroom does have a shower if you are arriving after a long flight!
Trans Maldivian Seaplane Ride to Conrad Maldives
Quick tip: Make sure to wear your tropical clothes on the plane or bring a change to the lounge with you. The seaplane is HOT.
We were quickly walked through the building containing the lounge and out to the seaplane.
Then we saw some gorgeous island views:
After 35 minutes or so we touched down and pulled up to the Conrad Maldives seaplane docking area with a warm greeting from a few employees, including our excellent host Naoko.
The lounge is a nice pit stop until the final leg to the resort. The seaplane ride, while being very warm, is a wonderful way to start to view the beauty of Maldives. It’s not cheap but unfortunately it’s your only choice so enjoy the views and look forward to the start of your time in paradise!
