I received an email from Starwood yesterday announcing an increased referral bonus for the personal SPG American Express card. Typically the bonus is 5,000 Starpoints when you refer a friend of family member for the card. In the past we’ve seen up to 10,000. The increased SPG referral bonus now sits at 7,500 Starpoints. You can earn up to 55,000 points each year by referring the card.
Increased SPG Referral Bonus Details
A few items of note regarding the promotion:
- Your friend will receive the standard 25,000 point sign up bonus after spending $3,000 in the first three months. Keep in mind that Starwood often increases this bonus to 30 or 35k throughout the year.
- Your referral bonus typically posts in 6-8 weeks
- Friends and family are only eligible for the signup bonus if they’ve never had the SPG American Express card
- Starpoints can be transferred to Marriott at a ratio of 1:3, so 25,000 Starpoints will give you 75,000 Marriott Rewards points. This allows for a cool stacking opportunity explained here.
SPG Points: A Valuable Currency
Starpoints are one of the most valuable points currencies out there. In addition to being able to redeem rather easily at Starwood properties, you also have several other options. Starwood has a huge stable of transfer partners including many major airlines. Furthermore, Starwood maintains a really cool “SPG Moments” program which can be a fantastic value. For this reason, we value Starpoints at around 2.2 cents each, which is much higher than other hotel programs.
Starwood and American Express have always been ahead of the curve with promotions like this. I really wish Chase would get into the referral business as well. I could only imagine what my Ultimate Rewards balance would look like with all the Sapphire Reserve referrals I’ve given. Anyway, if you don’t already have the SPG American Express Card, here’s MY REFERRAL LINK.
